Season Extension and Composting
Saturday, October 20 from 10 am – Noon
Hard to say goodbye to your garden produce with the frost? Learn simple techniques to extend your season through cool weather crops and crop protection. We will discuss best crops for your winter garden, show examples in the garden of row covers, cold frames and mini hoop houses.
This is also the time to make use of the fall bounty of organic matter. Learn techniques to manage the large quantity of leaves and garden debris to make sure it goes back to your soil and not the garbage.
Lastly, we will gather flowers, herbs, and even take cuttings for use during the winter months. These will be used in our final class, Gifts from the Garden.
Garden Buddies Fall Family Event
Saturday, November 3 from 10 am-Noon
$5 per child, Family-Friendly
This family event celebrates the season through hands-on activities focusing on the fall leaves and seeds. Children can make their own leaf journal and fill it up with rubbings, collages, and even their own homemade paper. Kids can learn about seeds through opening up the fall flowers and by planting a seed and watching it grow. We encourage families to collect leaves during a tour of the organic garden. Come enjoy the final days of fall at Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse.
Sustainable Winter Garden Preparation
Saturday, November 17 from 10 am – Noon
Fee: $10Winter is here or nearly here and the garden still needs to be cleaned up. What does this mean when you are gardening organically? We will discuss what should stay or go to encourage healthy soil as well as taking basic soil testing.
During a walk through the prairie, we will discuss saving seeds from your perennials. You are welcome to take some home for your own garden.
Lastly we will discuss pruning, a perfect task for the winter when the weather is mild and the trees are dormant.
