Discover the wonderful world of nature! Spark your curiosity and explore the fun and educational offerings at Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse, 3501 N. Kilbourn Ave., the Chicago Park District’s only park with a teaching greenhouse. Register in-person at the park.
Garden Buddies Family Event
Saturday, February 4 from 10 a.m. – Noon, $5 per child
Come enjoy a wintry day at Garden Buddies Family Event at Kilbourn Park! We will celebrate the winter season through hands-on projects that explore snow, soil, plants and animals in the winter. Come follow footprints, make a bird feeder, plant seeds in your own root viewer, and explore how our garden wildlife spends the winter. Also, explore Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouses’ outdoor gardens!
Seed Starting Class
Saturday, February 18 from 10 a.m. – Noon, $10 per person
Craving unique vegetables? Want those old fashioned French marigolds? Like the delicate herb chervil? Want to show your children the wonders of plants? Sometimes, to get the plants you want--when you want them--you just have to grow them yourself. Master Gardener and organic advocate Nancy Benjamin will show you the basics of seed starting. Discover seed sources, trays, growing mediums, lights as well as germination tips and times for a whole variety of vegetables and flowers.
Seed Swap
Saturday, February 18 from Noon – 2 p.m., Free
Do you have extra seeds from last year? Want to try something new? Come to the Seed Starting Class and swap seeds with other gardeners after the class. Can’t attend the class? Just join for the swap in the afternoon.
Garden Exchange Event
Saturday, March 10 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., workshops $20 for series from 1-4 pm.
Jump start your spring at Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse’s second annual Gardening Exchange Event. Bring your friends and connect with your neighbors at this community event and fundraiser.
You will have the opportunity to take basic organic gardening classes and find gently used gardening and cooking tools at bargain prices. All proceeds will support Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse’s programs that connect kids to nature and healthy foods.
Plant Sale
Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.,
Plant prices $2 & up, Cash Only
Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse will sell more than 150 varieties of organically grown vegetable, herb and flower seedlings. Customers can expect a wide variety of open-pollinated and heirloom tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. Other highlights include an assortment of greens and onions.
These seedlings are grown with the support of a team of dedicated volunteers who make this Plant Sale possible. This yearly fundraiser supports the greenhouse and our work to connect kids to nature and healthy foods.
Garden Buddies Summer Family Event
Saturday, July 28 from 10 a.m. – Noon, $5 per child
Celebrate the season at Kilbourn Park through hands-on projects that explore the summer garden. Become a butterfly, drink nectar from your very own flower, make your own hungry caterpillar, and explore the diversity of insects in our organic garden.
Harvest Festival
Saturday, September 8 from 1-4 p.m., $5 per person
Come join our celebration of the summer garden and its bounty at Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse. While visiting our gardens, you can enjoy hands-on crafts, organic gardening demonstrations, and cooking demonstrations with Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse volunteers.
Garden Buddies Fall Family Event
Saturday, November 3 from 10 a.m. -Noon, $5 per child
This family event celebrates the season through hands-on activities focusing on the fall leaves and seeds. Children can make their own leaf journal and fill it up with rubbings, collages, and even their own homemade paper. Kids can learn about seeds through opening up the fall flowers and by planting a seed and watching it grow. We encourage families to collect leaves during a tour of the organic garden. Come enjoy the final days of fall at Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse.
