Celebrate Black History Month in February 2011

The Chicago Park District commemorates Black History Month in February 2011 with various interdisciplinary events. Most programs are admission free or charge nominal fees. Many activities are geared toward the entire family. Please contact each individual park for additional information.

Black History Photo Exhibit—“Focus on Fuller”
Saturday, Feb. 5-25; Mondays-Fridays, 1-8:30 p.m.

See the collective work of local photographers Marcus Robinson, Giovannyce Rudolph and Larry Baldwin as they capture the community events at Fuller Park and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Immerse yourself in African music, spoken word and dance. Performers include: Spiritual Journey Ensemble, M. A.D.D Rhythms, Africa International House, Renewed Voices for Christ, Westside Community Music Center, Najawa Dance Corps and many more. The event honors Dr. Margaret Taylor Burroughs and the African experience in the Americas and the Caribbean.

Union Park Black History Celebration

This community-based celebration features dance performances and games for children of all ages.
Ashaki Black History Month Celebration
Friday, Feb. 25; 6-9 p.m.

Admission $3, all ages
Washington Park field house will be transformed into the countries of Ghana, Ethiopia, Senegal, Nigeria, Egypt, and Somalia. Eye-catching live musical performances, vendors with African artifacts and displays, and culinary delights illustrate the important roles each country has played in the lives of African Americans past and present.

This community celebration features dance performances and other family entertainment.
Umoja Black History Celebration
Saturday, Feb. 26; 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

The event features African dance performances and poetry readings plus a vibrant marketplace featuring food, jewelry and clothing.
Black History Month Celebration
