A visit with Santa

The Chicago Park District hosts numerous holiday events this winter such as skating with Santa, chocolate house making and much more.  For the full schedule of holiday events, click here.

Holiday highlights this winter include:

Ice Skating
• Friday, Nov. 23 – Sunday, Feb. 24, weather permitting
• Various locations and times; Please note that schedules and fees are subject to change. Click here for locations.
The Chicago Park District operates 8 ice rinks.  Hours and skate rental prices vary.  Please note there is an admission fee at The Rink at Wrigley and at McFetridge Sports Center in California Park, an indoor rink that is open year round except August.  All other rinks offer free admission.  Concessions are available at select rinks.

Winter Flower and Train Show
• Saturday, Nov. 24– Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013

Several model trains wind their way through a miniature village set in a field of vibrant Poinsettias.  The village, comprised entirely of natural materials including willow, spruce and birch woods, features a variety of Chicago-style homes and famous buildings such as the neighborhood bungalow, Chicago Theater and Chicago Water Tower Place.

Breakfast with Santa
• Saturday, Dec. 1, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
• United Club at Soldier Field, 1410 S. Museum Campus Dr.
• Admission is $55 for adults, $25 for children ages 3-12, and free for children under 3 years of age

Enjoy a lavish brunch during one of the few times when the United Club’s fine dining is open to the public.  Santa and his elves will be on hand and families can bring an ornament to decorate the stadium’s tree.

Gifts from the Garden

Pot cuttings to take home, and make teas and a hand balm, two perfect handmade gifts for the holidays.

Wreath Decorating Workshop
• Saturday, Dec. 1, session one: 10 a.m.–12 p.m.; session two: 1-3 p.m.

• Ages 18 and up, admission $30 for one session
Create unique decorations at this workshop led by advisory council members.  Supplies are provided.

A Charlie Brown Christmas Play
• Saturday-Sunday, Dec. 1-2, 8-9 from 1:30-3:30 p.m.

• All ages, admission $5 per child, $10 per adult
Sheil Park adapts the classic carton.  Join the director and cast after each performance for a discussion.

• Weather permitting; there must be at least three inches of snow

• $5 to check out equipment for two hours at the Northerly Island visitor center on a first-come, first-served basis with a valid ID.
Discover Northerly Island this winter by snowshoeing or cross country skiing during select dates.  If you have your own cross country skis or snowshoes, it is free to ski and trek around the island.

Dinner with Santa

Join Santa for dinner, entertainment, a craft project and more.

Holiday Showcase
• Saturday, Dec. 8, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

• All ages; admission $10 for children (covers lunch and activities), $6 for adults
Attendees enjoy lunch, arts and crafts, games and more.

Polar Adventure Days
• Saturday, Dec. 8, Jan. 19 & Feb. 16, 12 – 4 p.m.
• Northerly Island, 1521 S. Linn White Dr., 312-742-PLAY
• All ages, admission free; limited parking available for $3; cash only
Visitors will have the opportunity to come face-to-face with live animals, engage in winter activities, create nature-inspired crafts and much more.  Don’t forget to dress warm for this seventh annual event as events take place both outdoors and inside the visitor center.

Do It Yourself Nutcracker

Audience members star in this holiday classic dancing alongside students.

Ornament Making

Holiday Dance Recital

Dinner with Santa

Ornament Making
• Friday, Dec. 14, 4 p.m.

Participants will make various ornaments as they sip cocoa and listen to holiday tunes.

Winter Solstice
• Saturday, Dec. 15, 6-9 p.m.

• All ages; admission free, no registration required
North Park Village Nature Center welcomes winter with live music, crafts, walks along luminary-lit trails, and a visit with critters from Big Run Wolf Ranch.

Chocolate House Making Workshop

Skate with Santa

Come out for a night of skating in the park’s gymnasium.  Fee includes hot dog, beverage, popcorn and limited skate rental.  If you have your own skates, feel free to bring them.
