Chicago Park District & South Shore Opera Company Present Excerpts from The March: A Civil Rights Opera

poster-239x300The Chicago Park District and the South Shore Opera Company present an admission-free performance featuring excerpts from The March: A Civil Rights Opera by librettist Alan Marshall and composer Jonathan Stinson on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 4 p.m. at the South Shore Cultural Center, 7059 S. South Shore Dr.  The event is one of several Black History Month events in Chicago parks.  Click here for a full listing.

The March is a work in progress about the civil rights movement.  The opera uses the march and the surrounding historical period as a backdrop to highlight the personal stories of both well-known and previously obscure individuals who came together in August 1963 and made history.

Scenes from the opera include the meeting of civil rights leaders to discuss a potential march, featuring Martin Luther King's jazz-inspired aria "Just a Few Hearts."  In another scene, President Kennedy sings the aria "How Will We Be Remembered?" in response to a group of southern Democrats imploring him to abandon pursuit of civil rights legislation.  The evening concludes with the entire cast and audience joining hands and singing “We Shall Overcome.”

Amy Hutchison serves as director and Rachael Kerr as music director.  Cast includes: Leila Bowie; Scott Brunscheen as President John F. Kennedy; Aurelia Clunie; Corey Grigg as Senator Strom Thurmond; Tom Hall as Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson; Bernard Holcomb; Cornelius Johnson; Kimberly Jones as Coretta Scott King; Brian-Alwyn Newland as Emmett Till; Kevin Siembor; Kirk Walker; Vince Wallace; and Martin Woods as Martin Luther King, Jr.

The South Shore Opera Company was founded by Marvin Lynn in 2008.  The company’s mission is to make opera and musical theater more accessible to diverse Chicago audiences. The company was formed in partnership with the South Shore Cultural Center and its advisory council.
