Garfield Park Conservatory's Fern Room Reopens to Public

12/1/2011

Work Continues to Rebuild the Westside Gem After June 2011 Hail Storm

garfield-hail-damageWHAT:
The Garfield Park Conservatory reopens the historic Fern Room after a severe hail storm damaged 60 percent of the facility. A temporary polycarbonate roof has been installed to protect the plants during the cold winter months.

WHO:
Visitors can rediscover the historic Fern Room and see the rebuilding progress currently underway.

WHEN:
Saturday, December 3 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

WHERE:
Garfield Park Conservatory, 300 N. Central Park Ave.

MORE:
The Conservatory horticulture staff was busy protecting the plants in the Fern Room since late June, when the glass roof shattered because of a strong hail storm. Work that normal could not be done in the Fern Room while open to the public was able to be completed, such as replacing old soil throughout the 103 year old Fern Room. Visitors now can see the original walls created by Jens Jensen. Come take a peek at this history that was hidden by the lush vegetation.

The cleanup and rebuilding efforts continue. For more information about how you can help save the Garfield Park Conservatory, “One Pane at a Time” go to www.garfieldconservatory.org or call 773.638.1766.
