The Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA), in partnership with the City of Chicago and the Chicago Park District, kicked off its popular ‘Go Run program
on April 15 at 9 a.m. in three local parks. More than 3,000 runners and walkers participated in the first year of the free, organized, timed 1 Mile and 5K community runs.
‘Go Run, short for Chica-Go Run, will occur concurrently at Humboldt Park, Warren Park and Washington Park every Saturday at 9 a.m. during the scheduled dates of operation. In 2017, CARA member staff and volunteers will host 72 of these grassroots running events aimed at activating neighborhood parks, strengthening communities and encouraging a healthy lifestyle through running and walking.
The eight- week spring season will operate from April 15 to June 3. After a four-week break, ‘Go Run will return for another eight-week summer session beginning July 8, and again for a fall eight-week session set to start September 30.
“The Chicago Park District is proud to partner with CARA to continue the work of fostering healthy habits in children and adults, and increasing access to recreational opportunities like walking, jogging and running in our neighborhood parks,” said Chicago Park District Superintendent and CEO Michael P. Kelly.
‘Go Run is free and open to everyone who is interested in coming out to their neighborhood park to race, run, jog, walk or volunteer. Long-time runners, newcomers, families and children are invited to participate. The volunteers at each ‘Go Run are as important to the mission of the program as are the runners and walkers. Volunteers are not only needed to help support each run, but also to encourage greater community engagement at, and long after, each ‘Go Run.
At ‘Go Run participants may choose from either a 1 mile or 5K (3.1 mile) course located entirely within the park. Both runs begin simultaneously. The events are family-friendly and open to all ages. Strollers, baby joggers and participants with pets on a leash are welcome. Participants may sign-up online prior to the run at GoRunChicago.org
. Walk-up registrants are also welcomed at each run between 8:15 a.m. and 8:45 a.m.
This spring, participants who run the entirety of the path, and/or volunteer at all eight runs will receive a free ‘Go Run shirt in recognition of their accomplishment. All ‘Go Runs are timed and results are posted on the ‘Go Run website
immediately after each run to help participants track their progress.
