Airbnb Partners with the Chicago Park District to Build the Sunshine Daydream Playground in Douglas Park, Honoring the Grateful Dead’s 50-Year Musical Career

Chicago Park District and Airbnb representatives, Douglas Park daycampers and members of the North Lawndale community today gathered to dedicate Sunshine Daydream Playground, 1850 S. Albany, during a grand opening ceremony in Douglas Park today.

The musically-themed play space, appropriately named after the famed rock band Grateful Dead’s popular song that bears the same name, features a design inspired by musical instruments. Activities on the unique playground include cello spinning, piano climbing, xylophone playing, drumming and more.

Last summer, Airbnb partnered with the team behind the Grateful Dead's final “Fare Thee Well Tour” at Soldier Field. Following the successful tour, Airbnb wished to make a lasting contribution to the City of Chicago on behalf of the band and their 50 years of music and community. As a result, the Sunshine Daydream playground was funded, in part, with a generous donation of $150,000 for the complete renovation and installation of a new playground sign.  An inscribed brass plaque welcoming visitors to the play area will forever serve as a reminder of the iconic band’s commitment to “the sense of belonging and community.”

“We are honored to add a musically-themed playground to our repertoire that blends culture and recreation, as well as inspires creativity in our parks,” said Chicago Park District CEO Michael Kelly. “The Chicago Park District is able to uphold its commitment of investing in playground renovation projects across the city in part because of generous contributors like Airbnb.”

“Airbnb is proud to partner with the City of Chicago and the Chicago Park District to honor the work and legacy of the Grateful Dead,” said Alex Ward, Airbnb Team Lead, Host & Community Operations. “We hope the Sunshine Daydream playground provides an inviting and joyful environment that encourages children, and the Douglas Park community, to explore music and collaboration in a whole new way for years to come.”

The playground is one of many built as part of Mayor Emanuel’s Chicago Plays! playground renovation program.

In March 2013, Mayor Emanuel announced that over a five year period, the Chicago Park District would restore 300 of its oldest playgrounds in communities across Chicago. The program has since grown to 327 playgrounds, and is a year ahead of schedule, with the final 88 to be complete by year’s end.
