Jazz City: Until Emmett Till - Ernest Dawkins
Ernest Dawkins composed this piece to mark the anniversary of Till’s smurder in 1955. It comes home now, to be performed in the neighborhood where Emmett Till grew up. A powerfully told story that is uplifting both musically and spiritually, it features Dee Alexander as Mamie Till, and Khari B. who wrote and performs the lines.

JazzCity is a collaboration initiated by the Jazz Institute of Chicago with the Chicago Park District. Since 1997, we have partnered to bring free jazz performances to city parks—everyone from jazz masters Von Freeman and Willie Pickens to jazz-and-basketball improvisation with a hip hop poet.
Many young Chicago musicians have made their public debut with JazzCity and gone on to national repute, and renowned jazz legends have presented projects on a grand scale. Numerous JazzCity projects have gone from the neighborhood parks to the awesome stages at Millennium Park and the Chicago Jazz Festival. Come celebrate the past, present and future of jazz in Chicago!
