Jazz City: String Thing
Chicago’s creative music community doesn’t recognize traditional musical boundaries, so what happens when you put classically trained string players into a free improvisational context, is a special thrill. Bassist Larry Gray leads this experiment with Tomeka Reid on cello, James Sanders and Renee Baker on violin and Jeff Parker on guitar.

JazzCity is a collaboration initiated by the Jazz Institute of Chicago with the Chicago Park District. Since 1997, we have partnered to bring free jazz performances to city parks—everyone from jazz masters Von Freeman and Willie Pickens to jazz-and-basketball improvisation with a hip hop poet.
Many young Chicago musicians have made their public debut with JazzCity and gone on to national repute, and renowned jazz legends have presented projects on a grand scale. Numerous JazzCity projects have gone from the neighborhood parks to the awesome stages at Millennium Park and the Chicago Jazz Festival. Come celebrate the past, present and future of jazz in Chicago!
