CHICAGO PARK DISTRICT ANNOUNCES “COMMUNITY GARDENS IN THE PARKS” PROGRAM

Release Date: 04/24/07

Gardening is almost impossible for some residents living in the city, with no private outdoor green space available to dig and plant to their heart’s content. Chicago Park District announced this weekend the “CommunityGardens in the Parks” program, which gives community residents a chance to garden in their neighborhood parks.

“We are excited to offer city residents a chance to garden with our Community Gardens In the Parks Program,” said Chicago Park District General Superintendent & CEO Timothy J. Mitchell. “This wonderful program will allow park patrons to connect with their community by having an active role in beatifying green spaces on Park District land. Wicker Park Garden is a great example of a CommunityGarden in the Parks.”

The program gives gardeners a chance to design, plant and care for their community gardens. Gardening promotes good overall fitness and health, while giving individuals an opportunity to be active, creative, social and establish a direct connection with nature.

Those interested in starting their own community garden in a park, must complete a five-step process. The process officially registers an interested group with the Chicago Park District and offers interested gardeners guidance and suggestions when starting their own community garden in the parks.

Community members can also join already existing community garden groups. For a list of existing community gardens or more information about the “Community Gardens In the Parks” program, go to www.chicagoparkdistrict.comor call 312.742.play.
