Riders of All Levels Are Encouraged to Bike the 18-Mile Paved Lakefront Path
Release Date: 04/27/07
Cyclists are invited to take the Chicago Park District’s Tour Da Lakefront Bicycle Challenge this summer from Memorial Day to Labor Day, May 25 – Sept. 3. Bikers can begin at one of two locations:
•Margate Fieldhouse, 4921 N. Marine Dr., on the north side, or
•Rainbow Beach & Park, 3111 E. 77th St., on the south side.
The course takes them along Chicago’s scenic 18-mile paved lakefront path to the opposite park.
Timothy J. Mitchell, Chicago Park District General Superintendent and CEO, comments, “This initiative is one of many efforts by the Chicago Park District to encourage Chicagoans to incorporate exercise and other healthy activities into their lifestyles. This is also a great way for people to enjoy the beautiful lakefront.”
To participate, bikers will check in with the park staff at the front desk of their starting park. Park staff will give bikers a map of the lakefront path and will pin a tag onto the rider’s back that states the date and time of departure.
Upon completing the ride at the destination park, bikers will check in with the park staff at the front desk. They will receive one complimentary yellow jersey while supplies last and a print out listing bike friendly CTA bus routes headed north or south.
Bikers have a minimum of three hours to complete Tour Da Lakefront before the end of business hours at each respective park’s fieldhouses.
•The first bikers of the day may leave their starting park beginning at 8 a.m. on any day of the week.
•The last bikers of the day may leave their starting park at 5 p.m. Monday thru Friday and at 2 p.m. on the weekends.
