Proposed Design to Include River Walks, Landscaping and River Access

Release Date: 11/14/07

The Chicago Park District’s Board of Commissioners is expected to approve an order to enter a contract with Camp, Dresser and McKee Inc. for the design of vacant riverfront at Ping Tom Park in Chicago’s Chinatown neighborhood. The Board of Commissioners will vote on the recommendation today, Wednesday, Nov. 14.

The Ping Tom Park shoreline parcel measures 5.89 acres, which includes 875 feet of shoreline, and is the final undeveloped portion of the park. In 2002, The Chicago Park District and residents in the neighborhood collaborated to develop a framework plan for a phased design process.

Phase three development will include:
• a study on existing seawall to determine options for developing a natural, accessible shoreline.
• riverfront trail that will pass through the site and link the future development to the north with the existing park land south of 18th Street.
• link south, east and any future parkland portions to the north.
• preparation of an environmental remediation plan, site restoration, landscaping specifications and drawings.
• refinement of the existing concept plan.
• survey, landscaping, utilities, grading, soil, remediation, and amenities.

Services will also include feasibility studies, investigations, infrastructure analysis and production of design documents for a potential soccer field east of the railroad tracks and north of the existing baseball field.

Proposed work will not exceed $436,345. Camp, Dresser and McKee Inc. was selected after a bidding process and was evaluated on such criteria as cost, experience, project schedule and project approach.
