GET ON THE BUS & TOUR THE HISTORIC CREATIONS OF FAMED ARCHITECT DANIEL BURNHAM IN CHICAGO’S PARKS

As part of the Burnham Plan Centennial celebration, the Chicago Park District presents Discovering Daniel Burnham in Chicago’s Parks Saturday, Aug. 1 and Sept. 26, 2009 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. This guided bus tour highlights the extraordinary works of American architect and urban planner Daniel Burnham.
The cost is $30 and includes lunch. Reservations can be made by calling 312-742-4947 by Friday, July 14 for the Aug. 1 tour and Tuesday, Sept. 18 for Sept. 26. Patrons are advised to arrive 20 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time for check in. The meeting location is at upper Randolph Street, south of Stetson.
Julia S. Bachrach, historian of the Chicago Park District, leads the tour that reveals examples of Burnham’s work spanning a period of more than 30 years. Guests will learn about Burnham and Root’s work in Jackson and Washington Parks, the legacy of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition and the subsequent redesign of Jackson Park with architect Frederick Law Olmstead.
The tour will also discuss the Burnham & Co. contribution to Chicago’s revolutionary neighborhood parks, such as Sherman and Fuller Parks, and the ways that Grant Park and the lakefront influenced Burnham & Bennett’s 1909 Plan of Chicago.
