LOCAL SOUND ARTISTS TRANSFORM PLAYGROUNDS INTO INSTRUMENTS AS PART OF THE SONIC PLAYGROUND SERIES

The Chicago Park District and Parkways Foundation, its nonprofit partner, present the new series, Sonic Playground, Aug. 25 and Sept. 1 and 20 at three different locations. All concerts are admission free.
Sonic Playground is a series featuring sound artists who will activate a playground, turning it into an interactive instrument. For example, artist will either collect sounds from playgrounds or play components of the playground and then use these samplings as active components of their live performances.
Following is the schedule:
Tuesday, Aug. 25
6-8 p.m.
Park Number 532 (Lake Park Crescent), 1061 E. 41 St.
Eric Leonardson will explore the acoustic and electro-acoustic properties of the playground.
Tuesday, Sept. 1
6-8 p.m.
Athletic Field Park, 3546 W. Addison St.
Ryan Ingebritsen will use contact microphones as sensors to turn the activity of children on the playground into information used to trigger music.
Sunday, Sept. 20
3-5 p.m.
Mt. Greenwood Park, 3724 W. 111th St.
Douglas Ewart creates toy tops made from recycled wood, metal, and plastic materials. Volunteers will spin his tops while tai chi artists, a dancer and two double-dutch teams activate the playground. An all-star crew from the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) serves as his backing band.
