1996 Olympic Gold Medalist Kerri Strug will be in Chicago on Tuesday, Jan. 13 to kick off the 2009 Tyson Fitness Challenge, a fitness initiative that will be held at the Chicago Park District in conjunction with its gymnastics programs.
Getting kids physically active after the holidays and during the winter months is always a challenge, and gymnastics promotes active lifestyles in a fun and safe atmosphere. The Tyson Fitness Challenge focuses on four fitness components: cardiovascular exercise, strength training, flexibility and nutrition. These fundamentals develop a strong fitness base for everyone, not only those in the sport of gymnastics, but also for those participating in other sports and activities.
USA Gymnastics partnered with Chicago 2016, World Sport Chicago and the Chicago Park District to hold the community-based activity to help promote the Tyson American Cup, a prestigious international gymnastics invitational scheduled for Feb. 21 at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill. Strug will also visit area gymnastics clubs to meet with local gymnasts.

Kerri Strug: Strug is best-known for landing a vault on an injured ankle to help the U.S. women win their first-ever Olympic team gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Ga. Strug’s performance earned her a variety of awards and accolades, from the Olympic Spirit Award to a spot on the Wheaties box. She was featured on the cover of both Time and People; appeared on several television shows, including Beverly Hills 90210, Saturday Night Live and Touched by an Angel; and had interviews on Today, Dateline and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
