Boxing Center Fees Waived for Fall Session at Citywide Rings

Park District Also Hosts Three Amateur Boxing Demonstrations This Fall

Release Date: 09/06/07

Aspiring youth ages 8-16 get the chance to step into the ring for free this fall at any of the Chicago Park District’s 19 citywide boxing centers from Sept. 24 – Dec. 9. The fee waiver is the result of a generous donation by former youth boxer Tom Zbikowski.

“Chicago flexes its muscles as an international sports city this fall when it hosts the World Boxing Championships,” said Chicago Park District General Superintendent and CEO Timothy J. Mitchell. “We encourage youth to get into the spirit by visiting any of our newly upgraded boxing centers during this special promotion.”

The boxing program features instructors licensed by the U.S. Amateur Boxing Federation who provide both group and individual coaching plus fitness training and sparring experience using professional equipment. As part of the program, participants have the opportunity to compete in local and citywide tournaments.

Instruction is available for both first-time and experienced boxers. Gloves, head gear and training equipment are provided. Personal items such as gym shorts, athletic shoes and mouthpiece are the responsibility of each boxer.

Boxing is a challenging sport that builds muscle tone and strength, endurance, cardiovascular fitness and self-confidence. The Chicago Park District’s youth boxing program has produced a number of professionals including Olympians Michael Bennett, David Diaz, Nate Jones and Leroy Murphy and former champion Montell Griffin.

The Chicago Park District will also host three admission-free boxing shows featuring the youth boxers on the following dates:
• Wednesday, Sept. 19, 7-9:30 p.m., Clarendon Park Community Center, 4501 N. Clarendon Ave., 312-742-7512
• Friday, Sept. 28, 7-9 p.m., Loyola Park, 1230 W. Greenleaf Ave., 773-262-8605
• Thursday, Nov. 8, 6-10 p.m., Seward Park, 375 W. Elm St., 312-742-7895
