4.7 Acre Vacant Lot To Be Transformed Into Park

Chicago Park District Plans New Park in CHA Community

Release Date: 11/14/07

The Chicago Park District Board of Commissioners is expected to approve a contract that will spark the construction of a new park at 24th and Federal streets, near the Harold Ickes homes.

Currently known as Park #540, the park improvements would help transform the current desolate vacant lot into an open and active green space in the near South Side community.

The Chicago Park District Board of Commissioners will vote on the proposed park during its monthly board meeting today, Wednesday, November 14.

“The Chicago Park District continuously strives to meet the needs of communities throughout the City of Chicago,” said Timothy Mitchell, Chicago Park District General Superintendent & CEO. “Building a new park in this community will help the Chicago Housing Authority and Chicago Public Schools in its efforts to revitalize the Harold Ickes and Hilliard public housing developments.”

The proposed park would house a combination baseball/soccer field, an ADA accessible playground complete with asphalt walking paths and landscaped nature areas. This project would require the closure of south Federal and 25th streets. If approved, improvements are expected to cost approximately $2.2 million.

This project has been enrolled in the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Site Remediation Program, which ensures that Illinois EPA will be assisting with the soil clean up process and ensure that the park is compliant with environmental standards.
