LINCOLN PARK CONSERVATORY NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

TRAIN TO BECOME A DOCENT BEGINNING APRIL 12

Release Date: 03/21/08

The Lincoln Park Conservancy is seeking individuals to serve as volunteer docents at the Lincoln Park Conservatory, the North Pond Nature Sanctuary and Chicago’s National Historic Landmark - the Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool.

Docents, volunteers trained to educate the public, have the opportunity to foster a greater appreciation and understanding of the park. The training program begins on April 12 and continues each Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Docents can choose between three sites - the Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool, the North Pond Nature Sanctuary or the Conservatory.

Volunteer docents are asked to spend approximately nine hours per month giving tours to the public. Area experts on horticulture, the art of interpretation, the history of Lincoln Park, and landscape design will train docents for six weeks.

Located at the corner of Fullerton and Cannon Drive, the beautifully restored Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool is one of Chicago’s premier prairie-style landscapes designed by Alfred Caldwell in the late 1930s.

The North Pond Nature Sanctuary and surrounding landscape with a profusion of wildflowers and trees, has been transformed into a natural oasis providing homes for turtles, frogs, herons and over 190 species of migratory birds.

The Lincoln Park Conservatory is a treasured Victorian glass house dating from the 1890s with collections of tropical plants, a show house, all surrounded by two historic gardens.

After completing the training, docents will be able to give free interpretive tours to the public and organized groups. Applications are available through the Chicago Park District and the Lincoln Park Conservancy.
