General Superintendent & CEO Timothy J. Mitchell, Chicago Park District; along with congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (9thDistrict); state Representative Harry Osterman (14th District); Alderman Mary Ann Smith (48thWard) and hundreds of excited community members recently dedicated phase one of the newly renovated and largest Chicago Park District indoor recreation facilities Broadway Armory, 5917 N. Broadway.

“The remodeled Broadway Armory facility is yet another great example of what can happen when government agencies join together in a true partnership,” said Mitchell, the general superintendent of the Chicago Park District. “Each agency’s contribution lends not only to an improved facility, but the quality of life for community residents.”

“I’m proud to have worked with the Mayor Daley, Harry Osterman, Mary Ann Smith and the Chicago Park District to make this project a reality,” said U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky. “Not only will these renovations return the Armory to its former glory, but these improvements will help modernize the building by making it energy efficient and creating more usable space. These renovations and improvements will ensure that the Broadway Armory remains a tremendous source of pride for people in the Edgewater community and the entire City of Chicago.”

“This important park renovation will positively benefit the kids and residents of Edgewater for many years to come,” said state Representative Harry Osterman (14thDistrict).

Broadway Armory’s exterior thermal shell was restored and sealed up to decrease energy loss. The Chicago Park District then installed new energy efficient equipment and control systems for the building’s mechanical and electrical systems, allowing the facility to operate in an efficient way by providing alternate mechanical systems to use during months when heating and cooling is not necessary.

The 33,000 square foot gym is the largest and most used space in the building. The gym now has a passive ventilation system that exhausts the hot air which rises to the ceiling and intakes cooler air closer to the floor. The addition of three massive ceiling fans with a 14 foot diameter will work to consistently move the air in the gym, allowing the gym to feel more comfortable without using energy excessively to heat and cool the space.

Additionally, light fixtures were replaced throughout the building to reduce the total wattage from 36,770 watts to 29,442 watts for a total savings of 7, 328 watts or 7.3 kW. Skylights on the second floor ballroom have been restored to allow more day lighting into the building, which has proven to increase productivity in schools and helps to increase environmental health of buildings. A new sustainable bamboo floor was also installed in the second floor ballroom.

Other phase one improvements include: renovation of the kitchenette and the multi-purpose room in the senior area; new interior floor, wall, and ceiling finishes; refinished gymnasium floor with new striping for badminton, shuffleboard, high school and NBA basketball, hockey, and volleyball; vending areas and expanded gymnasium; new signage and flags; new fitness center; and landscaping improvements.
