POWERFUL FLOWERS BLOOM AT GARFIELD PARK CONSERVATORY

CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION CONTINUES WITH THE “FLOWER POWER” SHOW

Release Date: 05/23/08

The “Flower Power” Show will be on display from June 7 – September 28 at the Garfield Park Conservatory, 300 N. Central Park Ave., themed around the era of the 1960s and ‘70s. This year’s flower show is made even more special as the Conservatory celebrates its 100thbirthday with year-long events, themed “CHICAGOASIS: The Greenest Show on Earth.”

"The Garfield Park Conservatory offers visitors of all ages a chance to escape the urban jungle and reconnect with nature," said Mary Eysenbach, Chicago Park District Director of Conservatories. “This year is especially exciting for visitors to experience the Conservatory with all the great programs and events planned in honor of the 100th year birthday celebration.”

This year’s summer tropical show, entitled “Flower Power”, will feature showy flowering plants in addition to those selected for colorful foliage. The floral display will be enriched by a soundtrack of hit 1960s and ‘70s songs that make reference to plants and flowers in Horticulture Hall.

As a tribute to the Conservatory’s historic role as Museum of Botany , a section of the Show House will become a botanical museum, a name bestowed on the Conservatory by the City of Chicago in 1931. This living time capsule will not only display important plants of past decades, but will also address botanical concepts that bring to the forefront the role a conservatory plays in the enduring connection between people and plants. Check out this season’s Museumof Botany, where visitors can discover cultivars of the past & present.

The Garfield Park Conservatory celebrates 100 years of innovation and botanical contributions to the city and its visitors with year-long events, activities, shows and programs in 2008, all themed “CHICAGOASIS: The Greenest Show on Earth.” Beginning in June, listen and experience the Legacy Music Series where visitors can enjoy great evening performances on the Bluestone Terrace. The Legacy Music Series pays homage to Garfield Park’s ethnic foundations, the tapestry of Chicago’s rich musical history, and the diversity of our featured artists. The Garfield Park Conservatory is open every day of the year from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Thursdays until 8 p.m. Admission to the Conservatory and parking are free.
