DOROTHY & TOTO COMPLETE YELLOW BRICK ROAD AT OZ PARK

Park District, community unveil new sculpture

Chicago Park District General Superintendent & CEO Tim Mitchell joins Alderman Vi Daley (43rd Ward) and the community to unveil the Dorothy & Toto sculpture at Oz Park, 2021 N. Burling.This is the forth and final sculpture installed in the park named in honor of Lyman Frank Baum, author of the classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

“The installation of Dorothy & Toto completes the series of original Oz characters at the park and turns a visit to the park into a walk through The Wizard of Oz, ” said Chicago Park District General Superintendent Tim Mitchell. “We thank and commend the Oz Park Advisory Council for their tireless efforts to enhance their park.”

The Oz Park Advisory Council commissioned Chicago artist John Kearney to design and create the Dorothy & Toto sculpture. The 6ft. sculpture, located just west of Dorothy’s playground, is constructed from cast bronze and is mounted on a 4 ft. base

Park visitors can now enjoy Dorothy & Toto, along with the Scarecrow, installed June 2005, the Tin Man, installed in October 1995 and the Cowardly Lion, installed in May 2001. The Oz Park Advisory Council raised more than $70K to fund the total cost of Dorothy & Toto.

In addition to the four sculptures, Oz Park features other elements like the EmeraldGardens and Dorothy’s Playground that pay tribute to the classic tale. The Oz Park Advisory Council plans to sell commemorative bricks for the creation of the yellow brick road.
