2.49-Acre Site Will Offer Recreation Opportunities and Day Care

Release Date: 11/14/07

The Chicago Park District’s Board of Commissioners is expected to approve a transaction that will allow for the transferring of the current site of the Vietnam Veteran’s Museum at 1801 S. Indiana from the City of Chicago to the Chicago Park District for park and recreation purposes. The Board of Commissioners will vote on the recommendation Wednesday, Nov. 14.

Located on the near South Side, the 2.49-acre site includes a 29,746-square-foot building. The third floor of this building will continue to house the Vietnam Veteran’s Museum for three years. Other parts of the facility will be used for Park District programs and events.

The Chicago Park District is also working with the Department of Children and Youth Services to develop a day-care facility at the site.

The concessionaire currently in the building will have the opportunity to participate in the Chicago Park District’s concession program.

The acquisition of 1801 S. Indiana also includes the Women’s Park located adjacent to the existing Veteran’s Museum. This fully built park site features walks, landscaping, gardens, a fountain, parking, and the Clarke House Museum, Chicago oldest house currently operated by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs.

Following the Board of Commissioners vote, the agreement will be effective once a written agreement is executed within 180 days of the board’s approval.
