Polar Adventure Days Return to Northerly Island
Nature Park Offers Three Days of Free Family Fun This Winter

Due to last year’s success, the Chicago Park District invites families to experience the second annual Polar Adventure Days, an admission-free event taking place on three Saturdays, Dec. 16, Jan. 20 and Feb. 24, from noon to 4 p.m. at Northerly Island, 1400 S. Lynn White Drive, on the Museum Campus.
“Polar Adventure Days made a popular debut last year, and we’re bringing the program back to let people of all ages enjoy the beautiful nature area of Northerly Island,” said Timothy J. Mitchell, General Superintendent & CEO of the Chicago Park District.
Visitors will have the opportunity to come face-to-face with live animals, engage in winter activities such as snowshoeing, watch ice sculpture carvings, and create nature-inspired crafts at Polar Adventure Days.
The following features will be available at each Polar Adventure Day:
•The first 500 visitors receive a complimentary Polar Adventure Day mug filled with hot chocolate.
•Various live animals will be available to visit such as birds of prey and reptiles.
•Ice carving demonstrations.
•Free snowshoe and cross-country ski rental.
•Nature craft tables for creating gifts inspired by the season.
•Live entertainment such as storytelling or puppetry.
Following is the schedule of events for Polar Adventure Days on Northerly Island:
Saturday, Dec. 16
•Big Run Wolf Ranch will have wild animals on display including arctic wolves, a coyote and coyote cubs, a skunk and a raccoon.
•Siberian Husky Club gives a demonstration and a discussion on the Iditarod experience.
•Spring Brook Nature Center displays its Illinois live birds of prey to visitors.
•Snowshoes and cross-country skis will be available if there is enough snow.
•David Stokes, award-winning naturalist, presents an indoor educational program with live turtles, snakes and frogs.
•Leslie Robin provides nature themed face painting.
•Nadeau’s Ice Sculpture demonstrates live carvings of 8-foot native animals.
Saturday, Jan. 20
•Spring Brook Nature Center- This nature center will display its Illinois live birds of prey to visitors.
•Nadeau’s Ice Sculpture demonstrates a live carving of a functional ice slide for children to use.
•Snowshoes and cross-country skis will be available if there is enough snow.
Saturday, Feb. 24
•Spring Brook Nature Center- This nature center will display its Illinois live birds of prey to visitors.
•Nadeau’s Ice Sculpture creates Brrrr Blocks and other interactive pieces from ice for children to play.
•Snowshoes and cross-country skis will be available if there is enough snow.
