Park District Partnership with Illinois Restaurant Association Offers Teen Culinary Camp
Participants Learn Both Art and Business of Cooking

The Chicago Park District and the Illinois Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (IRAEF) have partnered to offer the two-week culinary camp from Aug. 6 – 17, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at two locations: the South Shore Cultural Center, 7059 S. South Shore Dr., and Macy’s, 111 N. State St., in the 7th floor culinary studio.
“The camp introduces teens to career opportunities in the industry as well as teaches them life skills through basic cooking techniques,” said Chicago Park District General Superintendent and CEO Timothy J. Mitchell.
The culinary camp covers knife skills, clean-up habits, roasting, grilling, frying, soups, salads, cold sauces, sandwiches, bread baking, hors d’oeuvres, and desserts. It also features a visit to Charlie Trotter’s restaurant, 816 W. Armitage, Thursday, Aug. 9 from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. allowing students to tour the facility, enjoy a multi-course luncheon at a professional fine dining location, and ask the staff questions.
The culinary camp is open to any 13-17 year-old high school student interested in either learning how to cook or exploring a culinary career. Space is limited and admission is free. Instruction is provided by staff from the Washburne Culinary Institute.
Teens can sign up for this camp by completing a Chicago Park District participation form and either hand delivering to the South Shore Cultural Center, or faxing it to 773-256-1163.
