Release Date: 10/09/07
Chicago Bears running back Garrett Wolfe will visit Lafollette Park, 1333 N. Laramie, Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 4:30 p.m. to lead drills and encourage the aspiring young athletes in the Chicago Park District’s Junior Bear program to dream big.
“We are proud to continue this partnership of about 60 years with the Chicago Bears,” said Chicago Park District General Superintendent and CEO Timothy J. Mitchell. “We hope that a visit from a former Junior Bear who has gone on to play professionally will inspire our youth to always put their best foot forward.”
The Chicago Park District’s intramural Junior Bear program gives 750 Chicago-area children ages 7-13 the opportunity to play at 14 Park District sites. This year, the program expanded to include a Pee Wee League for 7-10 year olds.
The Junior Bear season is currently underway and culminates in the championship Mum Bowl Saturday, Nov. 17 at 10 a.m. and noon at Soldier Field, 1410 S. Museum Campus Dr. During half time at the Mum Bowl, one Junior Bear will receive the Walter Payton Award that honors a player who not only exercises good sportsmanship, but is also an asset to his community.
The Junior Bear program has cultivated professional players such as Garrett Wolfe of the Chicago Bears. During his Oct. 16 visit, Wolfe will offer insight about his time as a Junior Bear, lead the players in several drills, and present a $60,000 check on behalf of Bears Care, the charitable beneficiary of the Chicago Bears, to the Chicago Park District.
Bears Care has provided long-standing support to the Chicago Park District by helping to fund the Junior Bear, Inner City Flag Football and Nerf Football programs.
