Release Date: 05/16/07

Chicago Park District announced it will commit to purchasing 30% of its electrical energy supply from a renewable energy source through a new contract with the State of Illinois. The District is partnering with Integrys Energy Services, who has agreed to provide 10% of the renewable energy at the same fixed price rate of standard electricity.

“Utilizing renewable energy is just one of many ways the Chicago Park District is demonstrating our commitment to our environment,” said General Superintendent and CEO, Tim Mitchell.

Participation in this contract will sustain the Chicago Park District’s greening initiatives by supporting alternative energy production. The State contract requires that a percentage of purchased electricity be sourced from renewable resources. By committing to purchase 30% of the total electricity from green power, the District helps sustain the alternative energy industry by providing a consistent demand for power from renewable sources.

Most of the supplied renewable energy will be derived from wind generated power. The new electrical supply contract began this month and Com Ed will remain the electrical distributor for the Park District. The 30% green power usage will be spread across the district, instead of directed to just a few field houses.

In 2005, the Chicago Park District named environmental stewardship among its top priorities. Since, the organization has increased its environmentally friendly practices and materials use into its programs. Last year, the District launched a recycling program and planted more than 2000 trees in parks across the city.
