Release Date: 03/13/08
More than 300 youth ages 13-18 from Chicago Park District programs show off their skills at the annual Teen Arts Expo Friday, April 11 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the South Shore Cultural Center, 7059 S. South Shore Dr.
“The Teen Arts Expo celebrates the creativity of the teens in our parks,” said General Superintendent and CEO of the Chicago Park District, Tim Mitchell. “Using the arts and culture as recreation has been engaging for our youth.”
Each teen takes one performing and one visual arts workshop during the day and then attends performances during the afternoon. Workshops include: jazz dance, African storytelling, tap dance, theater improvisation, hip hop dance, glass etching, found art sculpture, silk screening, and book and instrument making.
The Teen Arts Expo showcases the creative work that the Chicago Park District’s cultural instructors and partnering arts organizations are creating with high school teens in Chicago’s parks. The arts programs offer both a recreational and creative outlet for teens to explore after school.
The Teen Arts Expo is funded in part by the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. The grant made dance residencies possible at Trumbull, Clarendon, Sherwood and Ridge Parks. Three choreographers have been working in collaboration with the teen group instructor at these parks on preparing a performance piece for the expo.
