There's always an opportunity to help keep the Nature Areas in Chicago's parks beautiful. The Chicago Park District offers its ongoing Volunteer Stewardship Workdays this fall and winter.


North Park Village Nature Center Stewardship Workdays

* Wednesdays and Saturdays all year, 9 a.m. -noon

* North Park Village, 5801 N. Pulaski Road

* All ages

* Free

Activities may include non-native weed and tree removal, planting, seeding, seed collection and mulching. Dress for the weather. Meet in front of the Nature Center. For more information call the Nature Center at 312-744-5472.


Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary Stewardship Workdays

* Sept. 4., Oct. 2, 9 a.m. - noon

* Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary in Lincoln Park, Montrose Avenue and Lake Michigan

* All ages

* Free

Meet at the "Magic Hedge" located on Montrose Ave., east of Lake Shore Drive. Drive east toward Lake Michigan until you reach the "T" intersection by the bait shop. Turn right at the intersection at Harbor Drive and continue to the nature area on the left. Activities may include non-native weed and tree removal, planting, seeding and mulching. Nichols Park Wildflower Meadow Stewardship Workdays

* Sept. 5, Sept. 19 and Oct. 31, 3 p.m. - 5 p.m.

* Nov. 7, 2 p.m. - 4 p.m.

* All ages

* Free

Join the Hyde Park Meadowlarks in a variety of activities including cutting, weeding, planting and seeding. Dress to work outside. Meet in the wildflower meadow at Nichols Park. For more information, call Carol Schneider at 773-684-2619.


Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary Stewardship Workday

* Sept. 11, 9 a.m. - noon

* Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary in Lincoln Park, Montrose Avenue and Lake Michigan

* All ages

* Free

Help with the restoration of the valuable prairie and bird habitat by planting yellow coneflower, wild bergamot, little bluestem, prairie dropseed and many more. Also learn more about migratory birds and their habitat from the experts. Meet at the "Magic Hedge" located on Montrose Ave., east of Lake Shore Drive. Drive east towards the Lake until the "T" intersection by the bait shop. Turn right at the intersection and continue to the nature area on the left. Parking is available on the street. Burnham Nature Sanctuary Stewardship Workdays

Join the North Mayfair Improvement Association in a variety of activities including non-native weed removal, planting, seeding, and mulching. Dress to work outside. Meet in the Keeler Avenue parking lot, located just south of Foster Avenue. For more information, call 312-742-4072.


Jackson Park Stewardship Workdays

Join the Jackson Park Advisory Council in a variety of activities including non-native weed removal, planting and seeding. Dress to work outside. Exit Lake Shore Drive at Science Drive. Meet in the parking lot at Hayes Road and Cannon Drive, south of the Museum of Science and Industry and west of Lake Shore Drive. For more information, call 312-742-4072.


Bill Jarvis Migratory Bird Sanctuary Stewardship Workday

* Bill Jarvis Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Lincoln Park, Addison and Lake Shore Drive

* All ages

* Free

Join the Lakeview Citizens Council in stewardship activities in and around the Bill Jarvis Migratory Bird Sanctuary. Activities include invasive plant removal, mulching of paths, seeding, brush cutting and pruning. Please wear appropriate clothing including work shoes or boots and a hat. The stewardship day will take place rain or shine. Work gloves and tools will be provided. Binoculars and instruction in how to use them will be available during break times. Meet at the east side of the sanctuary at Addison St. and Lake Shore Drive at the viewing platform. Parking is north of the sanctuary in the Waveland Golf Course lot. Winnemac Park Stewardship Workday for National Public Lands Day

* Winnemac Park, 5100 N. Leavitt St.

* Free

Meet by the two large trees west of the parking lot off of Damen Avenue. We will be planting prairie plants. Dress to work outside. For more information, call 312-742-4072.


Sydney R. Marovitz Golf Course Stewardship Workday

* Oct. 2, 9 a.m. - noon

* Golf course in Lincoln Park, Montrose Avenue and Lake Shore Drive

* All ages

* Free

The Chicago Park District and ComEd are converting nearly four acres of turf grass in non-play areas into natural habitat for migratory birds along Chicago's Lakefront Trail. Come help with the restoration by planting joe-pye weed, golden Alexanders, bottebrush grass, side-flowering aster, and many other native plants. Also learn more about migratory birds and their habitat from the experts. Meet in the parking lot on Montrose Avenue, just east of Lake Shore Drive, east of the soccer fields. Dress to work outside. North Pond in Lincoln Park Stewardship Workday

Join the North Pond Conservation Council in collecting native plant seeds. Dress to work outside. North Pond is located behind the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum.
