The first phase of paid lakefront parking is now complete with pay and display meters activated at seven locations along the lakefront on Chicago Park District property. Installation at additional sites is expected to be complete by spring 2010. A video tutorial on how to use the new meters can be viewed here.
Plans for the parking meters began in October 2008, in preparation of the District’s 2009 budget. Budget meetings were held throughout the city, and Chicago aldermen were informed of the proposals. In December 2009, the District’s Board of Commissioners approved the measure. The parking meters will bring in an estimated $2 million in revenues to the Chicago Park District in 2010 and beyond.
The Chicago Park District’s 2009 budget addressed the lakefront parking increase in November 2008. In January 2009, the Chicago Park District Board of Commissioners approved measures to implement parking fees and each alderman of Chicago’s City Council was notified of the proposal.
“The Park District has held the line on property taxes for four years, and we consider a small parking fee a reasonable alternative to a property tax increase,” said Chicago Park District General Superintendent and CEO Tim Mitchell.
The Chicago Park District also encourages lakefront visitors to use alternative modes of transportation such as public transportation, walking, biking and carpooling in effort to be more environmentally friendly.
