Having just received the Award of Excellence in the Community Theatre Division from the Illinois Theater Association, Chase Park Theater presents William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of The Shrew” at 4701 N. Ashland, for ten performances, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 9-10, 16-17, and 30, and Dec.1, 7-8 and 14-15.
Chase Park drama instructor, Karen Fort directs this ‘problem play’ with an emphasis on the love and laughter rather than upon the dubious virtue of obedience to anachronistic gender roles. Petruchio (Luke Hamilton), with his trusty servant Grumio (Lee Peters), arrive in Padua, Italy to seek a wealthy wife and visit friend Hortensio (Scott Allen Luke). Petruchio weds and battles Kate the Curst, (Arin Mulvaney). Sweet sister Bianca, (Mercy Oni) elopes with Lucentio (Jon Buffington) while Gremio (Charles Mueller) and Tranio, (Raymond Lawson), disguised as his master, compete for Baptista Minola’s (Sylvia Schluter) parental permission to marry Bianca. Vincentio (Peter Esposito) is about to be arrested for thrashing Biondella (Emma Casey)when the Pedant (Duane Davy) impersonates Vincentio. The Tailor and Curtis are played by Michael Sanchez, and the Haberdasher and Widow by Eboni McLaurin. The Renaissance setting is being built by Adam Cobb and Joel Gross.
Light design is by Ryan Williams, sound design by Keith Fort, and Stage Management by Kate Leth. The Chase Park production will feature characters outfitted in elaborate costume designs by Diane Hamm. Stage fights are choreographed by Babes With Blades.
