HOLIDAY FLOWER SHOW AT GARFIELD PARK CONSERVATORY

Garfield Park Conservatory, 300 N. Central Park Ave., kicks off the holiday season this year with a spectacular floral display in the Show House on Saturday,November 28 and runs through Sunday, January 10, 2010.
Brighten your holidays and take in the holiday tradition with the Garfield Park Conservatory. This year’s Holiday Flower Show features fir treesdecorated in holiday lights surrounded by bold splashes of color from hundreds of poinsettias.Other featured plants include ornamental peppers, plumbago and Jerusalemcherries. The holiday scene is perfect for taking annual family photos!
Garfield Park Conservatory offers an array of exciting “growing” experiences for all ages with a number of special educational opportunities free.
The Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance offers a number of exciting programs year round that explore the power of plants. For additional information call 773-638-1766 ext 23 or go to www.garfield-conservatory.org. Here are a few samples of programs being offered:
| Discovery Dig Wednesdays - Wednesdays, November 4 - April 28; 3 - 6 pm - Elizabeth Morse Genius Children’s Garden - Free; No registration required - Due to holidays, there will be no programs on the following dates: December 30. Join us for an open exploration in the “Dig Pit.” Families have the chance to get their hands dirty by digging for dinosaur bones, planting pretend gardens, and many other rotating activities. Touchable plants and kid-friendly interactive activities will also be available during this time. Great for all ages! Wild Wednesdays - Last Wednesdays of every month (January - April); 3 - 6 pm - Sugar from the Sun Room - Free; No registration required - Due to holidays and special programming, there will be no programs on the following dates: November 25 and December 30. Throughout the season, celebrate “wild things” with live animal presenter Scott Heinrichs. Come out and ask Mr. Heinrichs questions about each animal and get a close-up look at some fascinating critters. Additional fun - such as scavenger hunts and animal-related activities - will also be available. |
About Garfield Park Conservatory
The Garfield Park Conservatory was designed by celebrated landscape architect Jens Jensen, who created a horticultural masterpiece and historic landmark located amid the beautiful boulevards of Chicago’s West Side. The Garfield Park Conservatory is the largest public “glass house” in the nation, displaying hundreds of exotic species of palms, ferns, cacti and tropical plants in landscaped settings under sparkling-clear ceilings, as well as a variety of flora showcased in beautiful outdoor gardens.
Hours, Admission, Parking
The Conservatory is open every day of the year, from 9a.m. to 5p.m. and Wednesdays, from 9a.m. to 8p.m. with free admission and parking. (Special exhibit and activities fees may apply.)
The Garfield Park Conservatory will be closed for three days adjacent to the holidays. The mandatory shut down days are effective: -Friday, Nov. 27 (the day after Thanksgiving) -Thursday, Dec. 24 (Christmas Eve day) -Thursday, Dec. 31 (New Year’s Eve day)
Directions
The Conservatory is located just fifteen minutes west of downtown. From I-290, exit Independence Avenue(3800 west) and travel north. Turn east onto Washington Blvd. Turn north onto Central Park Avenue(3600 west). The parking lot will be on the left, just before the conservatory. Alternatively, take the CTA Green line and exit at Conservatory/Central Park Drive.
