Mulberry Playlot Park
History
The City of Chicago acquired this park property in 1960 and transferred it to the Chicago Park District the following year. Officially designated Mulberry Park in 1973, the property was one of several parks named for trees and plants at this time. Mulberries are deciduous shrubs or small trees that grow from 30 to 80 feet tall. Their branches spread into a dense crown that bends down toward the ground. Their berry-like fruit, which turns from red to black when ripe, provides food for birds and small mammals. Mulberries can be found scattered throughout the eastern United States and Canada, from Massachusetts west across southern Ontario to Minnesota. Their range extends south as far as Florida and Texas. They are commonly found in Chicago's parks.
