Flying Squirrel Playlot Park

History

The Chicago Park District acquired this once-vacant lot for recreational use in 1969, and officially named it Flying Squirrel in 1998. Flying squirrels were among the many animals that inhabited Cook County when European settlers arrived in the early 19th century. They still can be seen here occasionally today. With loose folds of furred skin between their fore and hind legs, flying squirrels are able to glide through the air in a way that most mammals cannot.
