Hazelnut Playlot Park
History
A portion of the 1873 Burkhart Farm, one of Austin's original farmsteads, was subdivided for development in 1888. Streets and houses soon appeared near the original barn. As the new community expanded over the following decade, many of the farmstead's Hazelnut bushes continued to thrive on Central Avenue, between Chicago Avenue and Rice Street. Hazelnut Park lies within blocks of this location. Acquired by the Chicago Park District in 1973 the park received the name Hazelnut in 1998.
