Lifeguard Swim Test


To be eligible to enter the Chicago Park District Lifeguard Training Academy and to be hired, LIFEGUARD APPLICANTS MUST PASS THE SWIM TEST, which has the following requirements:

  • 200-yard swim against time.  No backstroke allowed.  Slowest passing time = 3 min. 30 sec.
  • 25-yard underwater swim.
  • Retrieve an object from the bottom of the pool in 14 feet of water from a surface dive.
  • Break the front and rear strangle hold in life saving.
  • Cross chest carry a subject for 25 yards.

Candidates may be required to take a vision test.
All candidates must have satisfactory hearing and speaking skills.

 


 

2014 Swim Test Dates

  • March 22, 2014
  • April 5, 2014
  • April 26, 2014
  • May 10, 2014 

All swim tests take place at Whitney Young High School, 210 S. Loomis, Chicago, 60607.

Applicants should report at 9 a.m. for the testing. Once the doors close no one will be admitted into the test.
Applicants must attend the swim test they signed up to attend (when they applied for the lifeguard position online). They will not be permitted in at other tests.
 

In order to be admitted to the swim test, the following is required:

  • Identification with a photograph such as:
    Illinois Driver’s License OR an Illinois State I.D. Card

    AND
     
  • One of the following:
    Social Security Card, U.S. Passport, OR U.S. Birth Certificate
     

 

No one is guaranteed employment simply because he or she has passed the lifeguard swim test.
