Junior Bear Football Kicks Off September 1st
The Chicago Park District's Junior Bear Football program celebrates its 64thseason and kicks off Saturday, September 1 with four games from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at La Follette Park, 1333 N. Laramie Avenue, and Jackson Park, 6401 S Stony Island Avenue.
"We are proud to continue this partnership with the Chicago Bears," said Chicago Park District General Superintendent and CEO Mike Kelly. "Youth learn about teamwork, good sportsmanship and how to put their best foot forward in whatever they do."
The Chicago Park District's Junior Bear program gives 850 Chicago-area children ages 8-10 (pee wee) and 11-13 (varsity) from 20 citywide parks the opportunity to play football on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at either La Follette, Jackson or Riis Parks through October 6, followed by the play offs beginning October 13.
The season culminates in the Mum Bowl championship Friday, November 2 at Soldier Field, 1410 S. Museum Campus Dr. During half-time at the Mum Bowl, one Junior Bear will receive the Walter Payton Award that honors a player who not only exercises good sportsmanship, but is also an asset to his community.
The Chicago Park District partners with the Chicago Bears and Bears Care, the team's charitable beneficiary, to provide the Junior Bear football program. Bears Care provides long-standing support to the Chicago Park District by helping to fund the Junior Bear and Inner City Flag Football programs.
This year, funding from a Bears Care grant provided pre-season parent meetings that emphasized the importance of good nutrition for athletes as well as concussion education and awareness.
