Mayor Emanuel Announces Free Wi-Fi at Five Chicago Beaches

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Park District announced today that five city beaches will now offer free wi-fi to visitors. Starting today, beach goers will be able to access free high-speed wi-fi at North Avenue, Osterman, Montrose, Foster and Rainbow beaches. The new networks at these five beaches are part of Mayor Emanuel’s overall commitment to extend free wi-fi to parks, beaches, and public plazas across Chicago.

Park District Continues to Limit Use of Pesticides in Parks

Each spring, park patrons may see dandelions growing in their neighborhood parks throughout Chicago, signifying a healthy, chemical-free park. The Chicago Park District for a fourth year is partnering with Safer Pest Control Project to offer park visitors a safer and healthier park by limiting the use of pesticides throughout the district.

Live Nation Entertainment today announces extensive improvements and expansions to Charter One Pavilion at Northerly Island for its 2013 summer entertainment season.  These changes will enhance the concert experience for patrons and artists alike while expanding the range of talent the facility can accommodate.  With these improvements, Charter One Pavilion will become an even more exciting recreational destination for Chicago’s lakefront in 2013.

Snowtrek at Northerly Island this Winter!

This winter season enjoy Northerly Island, 1521 S. Linn White Dr., by snowtrekking with snowshoes and/or cross country skies during select dates this winter from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weather permitting.

Park District budget keeps lid on taxes

By John Byrne, Chicago Tribune reporter The Chicago Park District unveiled a $410 million budget proposal Monday that holds the line on new property taxes and fees for park programs while increasing the number of spots in some sports leagues and reducing the cost for out-of-towners to dock boats along the lakefront.

This Bird Migrated Into a Skyscraper

One overwhelming early morning, Flint Creek Wildlife treated 129 birds that had been gingerly collected off the sidewalks of downtown Chicago. It was fall migration season, and songbirds of all species were at it again, flying south for the winter and – many of them – along the way bumping into the city’s famously picturesque skyline.

Chicago Park District Receives National Accreditation for Excellence in Operation and Service

The Chicago Park District has been granted accreditation for standards of excellence in quality and efficiency by the national Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA). CAPRA acknowledges that the Chicago Park District has fulfilled requirements exemplifying its commitment to serving its patrons, employees, volunteers and communities.

Ice Rink Renovation Time Lapse Video

This summer, the Chicago park District's McFetridge Sports Center ice rink underwent a much needed renovation that included the total replacement of the ice rink, installation of a new concrete flooring system as well as above ground ice rink components. The project also replaced the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for the lobby, ice rink and tennis courts, as well as replacement of the lighting fixtures for the ice rink and tennis courts, upgraded the electrical switch

Inaugural Westside Music Festival Kicks Off July 21

The Chicago Park District and the Chicago Community Trust present the Chicago Westside Music Festival, an admission-free concert series at three parks in the North Lawndale, Garfield Park and Austin neighborhoods featuring a mix of national and local talent on July 21 and Aug. 11 and 18. The culminating concert features award-winning R&B artist Musiq Soulchild and Chicago’s own Grammy Award-nominated soul singer-songwriter Syleena Johnson.

Theater on the Lake Announces its 60th Season of Revived Productions from Local Companies

The Chicago Park District’s Theater on the Lake: The Chicago Summer Theater Festival turns 60 this year and is proud to announce the eight artistically diverse Chicago theater companies that will receive encore presentations from June 13 – Aug. 5, 2012. Each production will be performed for five evenings only at the theater at Fullerton Avenue and Lake Shore Drive.

Soldier Field Becomes First North American NFL Stadium to Attain LEED Certification

Soldier Field and the Chicago Park District recently announced it has been awarded the status of LEED for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB) from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Soldier Field is the first existing North American stadium to receive the award of LEED-EB Certification and the first NFL stadium to receive this prestigious award. LEED-EB stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

Garfield Park Conservatory Mourns Loss of Rare Double Coconut Palm

Garfield Park Conservatory recently suffered a great loss to its botanical collection with the death of the Double Coconut Palm, also known as Lodoicea maldivica, which lived in the Palm House for 45 years.
