The City of Chicago has launched a cultural planning process that seeks to:
- Fulfill initiatives identified in Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s Transition Plan
- Realize the benefit of culture on broad civic goals like economic impact, quality of life, community development, and cultural leadership
- Increase cultural participation – in numbers and in depth
- Strengthen Chicago’s cultural sector
The City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events is spearheading the process. A team of local and international cultural planning consultants have been engaged to lead the plan. Funding is provided through the City’s partnership with Allstate, The Chicago Community Trust, and partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
The process has begun! A draft of the Plan will be submitted in Spring/Summer 2012. The plan will be finalized in Fall 2012.
The Plan will:
- Identify top priorities for Chicago to fully realize its potential as a cultural leader
- Design a blueprint for Chicago’s cultural future
- Give voice to culture in Chicago – its many faces and dimensions
- Offer the tools to implement, sustain, and measure initiatives
Four streams will inform the planning process:
1. Public engagement
2. Research and data analysis
3. Innovation
4. Buy-In from cultural organizations, residents, businesses, philanthropic groups, and the City
