Chicago Park District historian Julia S. Bachrach presents lectures on the recent publication of the second edition of her book, "The City in a Garden: A History of Chicago’s Parks". The first edition, published in 2001, garnered widespread praise. WTTW Channel 11 producer and program host Geoffrey Baer hails the new edition as “a book about Chicago treasures from an author who is a Chicago treasure herself.”

The second edition of The City in a Garden illuminates Chicago’s 175-year commitment to its public parks.  With historical plans, photographs and drawings, it explores how luminaries such as architect Daniel H. Burnham, landscape architect and conservationist Jens Jensen, and social reformer Jane Addams shaped and influenced Chicago’s venerable green spaces.

The author will share other second edition highlights including recent research, numerous restoration projects, and newly-designed facilities, such as Millennium Park and Palmisano Park.

Julia Bachrach has served as historian and preservationist for the Chicago Park District for more than 20 years.  Bachrach is coauthor of Inspired by Nature: The Garfield Park Conservatory and Chicago’s West Side.

The second edition of The City in a Garden is published by Center for American Places at Columbia College Chicago and is distributed by the University of Chicago Press.
