History

The Chicago Park District established Erhler Park on Board of Education-owned property in 1964, improving the 3/4-acre site with an asphalt play area surrounded by lawn and trees. Ten years later, the site was designated Daisy Park as part of a city-wide program to name parks for trees and plants. In 1989, the Bucktown Community Organization asked the park district to rename the park for William Ehrler (1944-1989), an active organizer of area block clubs and long-time president of the neighborhood organization. Not long after granting this request, the park district rehabilitated the site with a new soft surface playground. In early 1991, the Board of Education transferred full ownership of the property to the park district, which added ornamental iron fencing along Cortland Street in 1998.
