In keeping with a tradition that began 45 years ago, more than 3,000 Special Olympics Chicago athletes will be participating in a “Parade of Athletes” at Soldier Field, the birthplace of the Special Olympics movement. Several athletes who participated in the first Games 45 years ago at Soldier Field will be acknowledged during the ceremony. A formal arrival and lighting of the ceremonial torch will also be part of the celebration.
The Opening Ceremonies serves as the formal start to three days of track and field competition, May 8-10, at Eckersall Stadium, 2423 E. 82nd St.. Special Olympics athletes will compete in athletics (track and field), basketball, cycling, gymnastics, soccer and tennis. Spectators are welcome.
