The Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance is hosting this important “bee-side” event, to share some compelling oral histories about bees and beekeeping. Come to this 5th annual public forum to hear stories, songs, and jeremiads from both seasoned and novice beekeepers. Whatever their experience, these folks got hooked on bees and beekeeping, and are eager to take a turn telling tales.
for an updated list of presenters, as well as to prepay, register, and see where you fall alphabetically in the potluck assignment. (Yes, this day is a beekeepers’ potluck. Honey tasting also encouraged. Bring honey from your hive for the tasting table!)
Storytellers/ Presenters to include, but not limited to:
Anthony McKinney, musician, massage therapist, and Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance beekeeping volunteer, offers a few serenades that help explain his passion for educating young children on bees and beekeeping.
John Hansen, president of the Cook-DuPage Beekeepers Association, is a beekeeping educator for North Lawndale Employment Network’s Sweet Beginnings, a program that teaches beekeeping to ex-offenders. In this presentation, John Hansen teams up with his former student, Kelvin Greenwood, to share challenges and successes of both beekeeping and life
Dr. May Berenbaum, award-winning entomologist, professor, and author of Honey, I’m Homemade: Sweet Treats from the Beehive, explains her metamorphosis from general entomologist to spokesperson for all things bees.
Dave Snyder, Chicago beekeeper, gardener and poet, presents a brief and unauthorized aesthetic biography of bees.
Charlotte Hubbard, Michigan beekeeper and contributing editor of the Walter T. Kelly blog “Dronings from a Queen Bee” will humorously share life lessons she's learned while keeping bees, as well as some of the lessons they've taught her (sometimes repeatedly.)
Please note that registrations cannot be refunded after Friday, November 9th. If you purchase a spot in this workshop after 5pm on Friday, November 16th, please either bring a printed copy of your email receipt, or show it on your smart phone at the door of the workshop.
