James Stuart donated the Heron sculpture to the old Children’s Zoo in 1988. California native Howard Wheatley Allen sculpted the free-standing, life-sized, realistic bronze heron. Allen began exploring the marshes and estuaries of Northern California at a young age, and created his first bird carving at the age of nine. After graduating from Dartmouth College and serving in the U.S. Navy, Allen returned his attention to sculpting birds. Although he initially worked solely in wood, in recent years, Allen has been casting most of his sculptures in bronze.
