Anaphylaxis is a potentially life-threatening medical condition occurring in allergic individuals after exposure to their specific allergens. It may also occur in children or adults not previously known to be allergic or hypersensitive. It is one of the most serious emergency situations to which district staff may have to respond. The reaction ranges from mild, self-limited symptoms to rapid death. Immediate action is required.
The Chicago Park District conducts staff education as to the signs and symptoms of an anaphylactic reaction. Education is patron and park-based.
In order for park staff to administer Epinephrine (Epi-Pen) if needed to a child enrolled in a park program, the following two forms must be completed and returned to the park supervisor (of the park where the program takes place). Both completed forms must be received by the park supervisor before a request for the emergency administration of Epinephrine (Epi-Pen) can be approved. If the child is registered for programs at multiple parks, these forms must be submitted to all parks.
