11/6/2013

The Chicago Park District is honoring Veteran’s Day weekend 2013 with a “Red, White and Move” Coca-Cola Troops for Fitness Celebration Saturday, Nov. 9 at 11:15 a.m. at Columbus Park, 500 S. Central Ave.  The event will highlight the program’s success and encourage more Chicagoans to sign up for the winter session.

The Coca-Cola Troops for Fitness program has helped the Chicago Park District increase opportunities for physical activity and wellness while offering employment opportunities for veterans and their spouses.

“Coca-Cola and the Chicago Park District share a commitment to encouraging residents to choose healthier, more active lifestyles,” said Chicago Park District General Superintendent and CEO Michael Kelly.  “As role models in their communities and champions for healthy living, our veterans inspire more families to be active every day.”

The Coca-Cola Troops for Fitness classes are part of the Park Families Wellness Initiative, which is supported by The Coca-Cola Foundation.  The Coca-Cola Foundation has been a key partner for the Chicago Park District in helping Chicago residents to make healthier choices that encourage more active lifestyles.  To date, more than 2,200 people have signed up for the Park Families Wellness Initiative programs, many of which are Troops for Fitness classes taught by eight veterans in 22 locations.

“Coca-Cola Troops for Fitness inspires communities to get active, drives awareness of activities in local parks and supports our military veterans,” said Lori George Billingsley, Vice President, Community Relations, Coca-Cola North America Group.  “The partnership between Coca-Cola and the City of Chicago is a powerful example of what we can achieve when we come together to deliver healthy solutions for our communities.”

The winter session class schedule for Troops for Fitness can be viewed online at www.chicagoparkdistrict.com and added to a wish list at beginning 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 18.  Online registration begins 9 a.m. Monday, Dec. 2 for parks located west of California Avenue, and Tuesday, Dec. 3 for parks located east of California Avenue.

In November 2012, Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined Coca-Cola Americas President Steve Cahillane to announce a $3 million grant from The Coca-Cola Foundation to help create the Park Families Wellness Initiative.  The effort features affordable nutrition education and active lifestyle programs for Chicago communities that are most in need of wellness services.  Managed by the Chicago Park District, the initiative hires U.S. veterans to teach Coca-Cola Troops for Fitness, military-style fitness classes.

Classes are conveniently located in a variety of Chicago communities and are also affordable alternatives to commercial gyms.  Offerings and schedules vary per location; click here for details.
