Update: KILBOURN PARKGREENHOUSE PLANT SALE May 18 & 19
Update [May 17] - Plant Sale Update:
Thanks to our friends at Growing Power and the Peterson Garden Project we have been able to obtain some additional plants for the sale. However our supply of plants remains limited.
Updated Info [May 13]: The Chicago Park District’s Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse is committed to local, organic, and sustainable practices and production.
This year, we made a commitment to remove peat, a non-renewable resource, from our potting mix and replace it with coir, which is made from coconut husks. Our vendor created a peat-free mix with coir, rice hulls, worm castings and certified organic compost.
Unfortunately, the peat-free mix, combined with unseasonably cool temperatures and low light levels due to the aging greenhouse roof, the result is that the quality and quantity of our crops is far below our expectations and standards.
Our plant sale will go on as scheduled [May 18 & 19 from 10am – 2pm], but the quantity of plants for sale will be extremely limited. The majority of plants we produced are very small and we will be selling those plants at reduced prices or for donation.
At the plant sale Friends of Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse will be selling certified organic compost, perennials, and baked goods. Proceeds from those sales will go to support programming and improvements to the greenhouse. Additional donations will be accepted and greatly appreciated.
On Sunday, May 19 you can also come and enjoy the Easy Being Green Family Event sponsored by Kids Table and Friends of Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse.
We appreciate your support for Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse and your patience with us during this trying time.
