The Law Department represents the District on all legal, regulatory and contractual matters. Areas overseen by this department include the management of personal injury and property damage claims filed against the District, claims filed pursuant to the Worker's Compensation Act, environmental litigation, tax matters, labor relations, municipal corporate matters, intergovernmental agreements, land use and acquisitions, Constitutional First Amendment Issues and supervision of municipal bond transactions.

The Chicago Park District Ethics Officer is responsible for enforcing the Chicago Park District Ethics Ordinance. The Ethics Ordinance requires all Park District officials and employees to abide by general directives to ensure fair and honest government. 


The Illinois Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) is a state statute that provides the public the right to access government documents and records. The law provides that a person can ask a public body for a copy of its records on a specific subject and the public body must provide those records, unless there is an exemption in the statute that protects those records from disclosure. 

Law Student Externship Program

The Law Department manages the Chicago Park District's Law Student Externship Program.  Legal Externships at the District provides law students with the opportunity to work in a diverse and friendly environment. Legal externs can expect to assist Park District attorneys with legal matters in multiple practice areas, while gaining practical legal experience.
