In response to the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching maroon, which categorizes Chicago's outdoor air quality as "Hazardous" due to wildfire smoke blowing in from Canada across the Chicago area, the Chicago Park District has taken several steps to ensure everyone's safety, and to encourage the public to stay indoors.
The Park District will be monitoring air quality conditions throughout the day to make adjustments to our facilities’ hours of operation, scheduled programming and events, and provide subsequent updates.
Currently, all Chicago Park District programming, including Summer Day Camp, will continue to be held indoors, per our standard operating procedure for air quality conditions. Programming, held in parks citywide, will be limited to indoor spaces with frequent water breaks, this morning. Parents/caretakers of registered park program participants have been notified of adjustments to regular park operations.
All beaches and outdoor pools remain closed, until further notice. Red flags will remain posted at the beach and on our website to alert the public at www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/beaches.
The Osaka Garden, and both the Garfield Park Conservatory and Lincoln Park Conservatory will remain closed for the day, and our outdoor landscaping and forestry staff have been moved indoors.
Many park locations and amenities are available to provide respite from the outdoors for individuals visiting our parks:
- 41 Cooling Centers at park sites have been activated. Find one near you at www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/cooling-centers.
- Indoor pools are still open. A full list is available at www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/swimming-pools.
- Seek respite from heat in our 250+ fieldhouses during regular operating hours. For a complete list of fieldhouses, please visit www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/parks-facilities/fieldhouses.
