Access to the Chicago Park District’s 70 fitness centers is available citywide

The Chicago Park District announced today the return of Chicago Moves Day, a health initiative that aims to connect Chicago residents to fitness and wellness opportunities across the city. More than 10 health and fitness providers and the Chicago Park District’s wellness, athletics and community recreation departments will offer a series of free, virtual workouts, starting from 11 a.m. The fitness series will launch with a live, free full body workout without equipment, which will incorporate both strength and cardiovascular skills. The session will be open to the public on Instagram at @we_move_chicago.

The goal of Chicago Moves Day is to educate and motivate Chicagoans to adopt healthier lifestyles and help prevent and manage chronic diseases like obesity, tobacco use and cancer.

“We are proud to bring back Chicago Moves Day and to motivate Chicagoans of all ages to get out and get moving,” said Chicago Park District & CEO Michael P. Kelly. “The Park District is in the business of fostering opportunities for residents of Chicago to take steps towards improving their physical health and making wellness a priority and a habit.”

The lunchtime event will feature free workout demonstrations, including Yoga, Pilates and virtual tennis.

This event is supported by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion’s “Move Your Way” campaign, a physical activity campaign that promotes the recommendations from the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. The Health.gov campaign encourages teens to complete sixty minutes of daily physical activity and adults to achieve 150 minutes a week. The Chicago Park District, in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), are collaborating to develop a community nutrition hub to expand access to healthy foods through park and recreation programs and services. The generous is part of a $2.5 million grant NRPA received from the Walmart Foundation to build capacity in park and recreation agencies across the country to serve as intentional community nutrition hubs that improve health outcomes for community members.
